Het idee…
Toen Jan (Epic Prog Radio) en ik (Massive Prog Radio) in januari besloten om de ‘Top 15 Beste Progalbums van het jaar’ samen te gaan organiseren, ontstond het idee om het gat in december op te vullen met iets nieuws. Nauwkeurig het internet afgezocht of het niet al eerder is gedaan….een Top 1000 met de mooiste Progsongs ooit gemaakt. Ik vond alleen een Prog Album Top 1000…dus was het plan geboren: De “Prog Top 1000 Of All Time”. Toen ik dit met Jan besprak begonnen de creatieve motoren in onze bovenkamers op hoge toeren te draaien!
The Idea 
Back in January, Jan (Epic Prog Radio) and I (Massive Prog Radio) teamed up for the “Top 15 Best Prog Albums of the Year.” That’s when another idea started brewing… how about filling December with something truly epic?
We searched everywhere online to see if it had been done before – a Top 1000 of the greatest prog songs ever. Nothing. Just an album version.
So the plan was born: the Prog Top 1000 Of All Time!
And once Jan and I started talking about it, the creative engines in our heads went into overdrive!

De totale lijst van ruim 1400 progsongs is als volgt samengesteld: Bijna 1000 stuks zijn de favoriete nummers gekozen door de luisteraars van Massive Prog Radio en Epic Prog Radio bij diverse programma-items in de afgelopen 12 jaar. Aangevuld met wat toplijsten die we op internet tegenkwamen. Het progpanel van progliefhebbers met uiteenlopende muzikale voorkeuren hebben met hun aanvullingen de lijst gecompleteerd!
The List…
The complete list of over 1,400 prog songs has been compiled as follows: Nearly 1,000 tracks are the favorite songs chosen by listeners of Massive Prog Radio and Epic Prog Radio during various program segments over the past 12 years. This was supplemented with several top lists we came across online. Finally, the prog panel—made up of prog enthusiasts with diverse musical tastes—completed the list with their own additions!
Hoe het stemformulier voor de Prog Top 1000 Of All Time ontstond…
Wat begon als een ambitieus idee om de ultieme lijst van progsongs aller tijden samen te stellen, groeide uit tot een technisch én creatief avontuur. Bij het bouwen van het stemformulier voor de Prog Top 1000 Of All Time kwam ik voor de nodige uitdagingen te staan — van dynamische lijsten tot automatische opslag in Google Sheets.
Op dat moment ontdekte ik de hulp van ChatGPT, en vanaf toen ging het snel vooruit. Samen ontwikkelden we stap voor stap een compleet formulier met vrije keuzes, stembevestiging per mail en automatische verwerking in de stemdatabase. Dankzij deze slimme ondersteuning is het gelukt om een professioneel en gebruiksvriendelijk systeem neer te zetten.
How the voting form for the Prog Top 1000 Of All Time came to life…
What started as an ambitious idea to create the ultimate list of progressive rock songs of all time quickly turned into a
technical and creative adventure. While building the voting form for the Prog Top 1000 Of All Time, I ran into quite a few challenges — from dynamic lists to automatic storage in Google Sheets.
That’s when I discovered the support of ChatGPT, and things took off from there. Step by step, we developed a complete system with free choice options, email confirmations, and automatic vote processing.
A great example of how technology and a passion for prog can go hand in hand!
Zet het maar in de agenda! De hele maand oktober kun je stemmen op de Prog Top 1000 Of All Time! De week ervoor publiceren we de lijst in Excel, zodat je alvast lekker kan gaan zoeken. Zorg ondertussen dat al je muziekvrienden zijn uitgenodigs voor deze groep, hoe meer stemmers, hoe mooier de eindlijst zal worden.

De Prog Top 1000 Allertijden draait om cijfers, veel cijfers! Tijdens alle uren hoor je de 1000 getallen tussen de songs in verschillende talen. Vreselijk veel werk, maar vreselijk leuk om te doen!
The Prog Top 1000 Of All Time is all about number, lots of numbers! Throughout every hour, you’ll hear all 1,000 numbers announced between the songs in various languages. It’s an enormous amount of work, but incredibly fun to do!

Het Prog Top 1000 Allertijden Logo
Ik heb met plezier het logo ontworpen voor de Prog Top 1000. Het verzoek was om – voor een logo – vrij veel tekst te verwerken, vandaar dat ik ervoor koos om het logo en teksten helemaal wit te houden, zodat het niet te druk oogt. De witte dunne golflijnen in de dikke letters staan voor geluidsgolven. De veelkleurige achtergrond symboliseert de diversiteit van de keuze aan nummers. Tot mijn vreugde was het logo in één keer goedgekeurd. Nou ja… nadat ik zelf een fout ontdekte: ik had er aanvankelijk een top 2000 gemaakt, maar dat was snel gecorrigeerd.

I thoroughly enjoyed designing the logo for the Prog Top 1000. The request included quite a bit of text for a logo, so I chose to keep both the logo and the text entirely white to avoid a cluttered look. The thin white wave lines within the bold letters represent sound waves. The multicolored background symbolizes the diversity of the song selection. To my delight, the logo was approved right away. Well… after I spotted a mistake myself: I had initially made it a Top 2000, but that was quickly corrected.

Een bekende eigenschap van onze zo geliefde symfonische en progressieve rock is de lengte van de songs. Ze zijn vaak lang, de zgn. “EPICS”. In de keuzelijst voor de Prog Top 1000 Of All Time die binnenkort wordt gepubliceerd zijn de ca. 1400 nummers gemiddeld 9:07 minuten lang!
One well-known characteristic of our beloved symphonic and progressive rock is the length of the songs. They’re often long, so-called “EPICS.” In the selection list for the upcoming Prog Top 1000 Of All Time, the approximately 1,400 tracks have an average duration of 9:07 minutes!
Nog even over de keuzelijst. Het is de basis voor eventueel een jaarlijks vervolg van de Prog Top 1000 Allertijden. Als je favoriete band of net dat ene nummer er niet in staat heb je de mogelijkheid om naast de maximaal 35 keuzes ook nog 5 vrije keuzes in te vullen. Juist die vrije keuzes zullen de lijst nog meer verrijken. En in de eindlijst krijgen de vrije keuzes ook de voorkeur boven de nummers in de lijst bij gelijk aantal stemmen.
Dus laat in oktober je vrije keuzes niet verloren gaan!
Just a quick note about the selection list. It serves as the foundation for a potential annual continuation of the Prog Top 1000 of All Time. If your favorite band or that one special track isn’t included, you still have the option to add up to 5 free choices in addition to the maximum of 35 selections. These free choices will enrich the list even further. In the final ranking, free choices will be prioritized over listed tracks in the event of a tie in votes. So don’t let your free choices go to waste this October!
Als je straks in de maand oktober op je favorieten gaat stemmen heb je naast de vrije keuzes ook nog de mogelijkheid om 1 of meerdere keuzes te voorzien van een motivatie. Welke herinnering heb je aan dat nummer of band, was het op een bijzonder moment. Welke nummers bezorgen je kippenvel of natte ogen. We zijn zeer benieuwd naar die verhalen. Kortom: het stemmen wordt nog leuker zo!
When you vote for your favorites in October, you’ll not only have the freedom to choose, but also the option to add a personal motivation to one or more of your selections. What memories do you associate with that song or band? Was it linked to a special moment? Which tracks give you goosebumps or bring tears to your eyes? We’re very curious to hear those stories. In short: voting just got even more fun!
